“Last Week Tonight” host John Oliver on Sunday night pointed out that President Donald Trump just loves putting his name and face on as many things as possible.
Just this week, the Treasury Department announced that Trump’s signature will appear on U.S. currency, which is a first for a sitting president.
“And that is just the latest thing he’s awkwardly added himself to,” Oliver said, calling the addition of Trump’s name to the U.S. Institute of Peace a “bold” move given his war with Iran.
Trump has even added his image to the front of annual passes for national parks, which Oliver called “weird” since “Trump seems to hate them” given the steep cuts he’s made to their budgets.
The new pass is the subject of an ongoing lawsuit given that they typically highlight nature, not political figures, and by law are supposed to feature the winner of an annual photo contest.
Oliver said the image looks like Trump is “getting a prostate exam from George Washington” or that it was made by AI with the prompt “What would Ebenezer Scrooge look like today?”
The image is so unpopular that it’s led to the creation of a cottage industry for stickers to cover up Trump’s image.
“There is something inspiring about seeing people find a way to enjoy their experience at national parks without having to look at the guy who’s actively trying to ruin them,” Oliver said.
But the move triggered the Trump administration, which announced an updated policy saying passes with stickers on them would not be accepted.
That hasn’t stopped Oliver and his team.
They’ve created a series of downloadable images that people can print at home onto stickers to cover Trump’s mug on the park pass, including an “absolute masterpiece” photo of a bear sticking out its tongue that fits right over the president’s face.
