An ex-White House aide for Donald Trump broke down why it’s a telling sign that lawyers at her old stomping grounds are reportedly preparing for a Democratic-controlled Congress ahead of November’s midterm elections.

“I think that they see the writing on the wall,” said Sarah Matthews, who served as White House deputy secretary in Trump’s first term, in a Tuesday appearance on MS NOW. “They know that the midterms are going to be brutal for them.”

Matthews — a Trump critic since her resignation in the wake of the deadly Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot — noted that midterms are historically not good for the party of the president and, this time around, voters feel “a lot of buyer’s remorse.”

“They feel like they’ve been bamboozled by this administration,” said Matthews, referring to Trump not following through on his 2024 pledges to bring down prices and to be a “peace” president.

She added, “In fact, he’s done the complete opposite of it.”

Matthews proceeded to argue that the administration knows it’s “actually going to be held accountable” if the Democrats flip the House before adding that there’s a “very good chance” the party could flip the Senate, as well.

“And that means trouble for the Trump administration,” she said.

Her comments follow a report by The Washington Post that the White House Counsel’s Office is arranging private briefings on how to gear up for “significant” Democratic wins in the fall, with an unnamed official saying it’s “obvious to everyone that it’s very likely” the GOP could lose at least one chamber.

Sources told the Post that the office’s staffers have urged political appointees to “be careful about what they put in writing.” They advised them on how to respond to congressional inquiries “in a timely manner.”

“I think that they’re worried and not just because they think, ‘Oh, the Democrats are going to go after us,’ but there might be something that they’re trying to hide,” said Matthews, who referred to alleged corruption in the administration, its handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files, and the killings of Renee Goode and Alex Pretti.

She continued, “I think there is a plethora of things that Democrats could go after them for in investigations. And so it makes sense that the White House lawyers are talking to these folks and trying to prepare them for this because I think think this is going to be their reality when we have a new Congress.”
