Emirates Airlines is targeting a full restoration of its international flight capacity by March 29, only weeks after a major regional security crisis forced the complete grounding of flights across the United Arab Emirates.

The ambitious recovery plan comes after Iran launched a series of ballistic missile and drone attacks across the Persian Gulf region, prompting the closure of civilian airspace on February 28. Despite the ongoing security concerns, Dubai-based Emirates has moved aggressively to restart operations, outpacing other airlines in the region that remain cautious about restoring flights.

Currently, Emirates is operating about 61% of its pre-conflict schedule, steadily rebuilding its global network through Dubai International Airport (DXB), which has become the central hub for the country’s aviation recovery.

UAE Authorities Emphasize Safety in Flight Resumption

UAE aviation authorities say the reopening of the country’s airspace has been managed carefully, balancing safety with the need to maintain international connectivity.

Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, chairman of the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority, said the government has prioritized passenger safety while gradually restoring operations.

“The safety of passengers, pilots, flight crews, and all personnel working in the aviation sector remains the absolute priority in all decisions related to airspace and flight operations,” Al Marri said. “We have resumed flights through a responsible approach that ensures safety while maintaining the continuity of the aviation sector.”

The strategy appears to be gaining traction. More than 1.4 million passengers passed through UAE airports during the first 12 days of March, signaling a steady return of travel demand, although the numbers remain below pre-conflict levels.

Gradual Return After Airspace Shutdown

Flights first resumed on March 2, when Emirates was granted permission to operate a limited number of repatriation flights through specially designated “safe air corridors.” These routes allowed aircraft to avoid potential conflict zones while bringing stranded travelers home.

Within days, regulators approved the airline to restart scheduled flights and sell tickets again. Passengers were also able to resume connections through Emirates’ Dubai hub, a key feature of the airline’s global network.

Since then, Emirates has steadily increased capacity, adding routes and frequencies while authorities monitor security conditions across the region.

Regional Rivals Struggle to Match Emirates’ Recovery

While Emirates has rapidly rebuilt its schedule, other Gulf airlines have struggled to follow suit. Etihad Airways, based in neighboring Abu Dhabi, is currently operating only around 13% of its normal pre-conflict schedule.

Industry observers suggest several reasons for the disparity. One factor could be the location of Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra Military Air Base, which may complicate the creation of safe civilian air corridors into Abu Dhabi International Airport.

Others believe the difference may reflect a more cautious strategy by Abu Dhabi authorities, which historically take a more conservative approach to aviation risk compared with Dubai’s pro-business policies.

Uncertainty Remains Despite Optimism

Despite the strong push toward full operations, officials acknowledge that the situation remains fluid. Security risks in the region have not completely disappeared, and aviation planners continue to monitor developments closely.

There are indications that recent attempted attacks on aviation infrastructure have decreased, and airspace closures have become shorter and less frequent. Air traffic controllers across the region have also been working extended hours to safely manage traffic through the restricted airspace.

Still, sources close to the UAE government describe the March 29 goal as a best-case scenario rather than a guaranteed outcome, noting that schedules could change quickly if security conditions deteriorate.

Another lingering question is demand. While Emirates is restoring capacity rapidly, it remains unclear how full the flights are, as some travelers postpone trips to Dubai or reroute connections through alternative airlines and hubs.

Even so, the airline’s aggressive recovery strategy highlights Dubai’s determination to maintain its position as one of the world’s leading aviation hubs, even amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainty.
