Rep. Robin Kelly (D-Ill.) has hit 100 cosponsors on her resolution to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, with dozens signing on in the last week.
“One hundred House Democrats from California to New York, Minnesota to Texas support my impeachment resolution because our communities have seen ICE’s Gestapo-like tactics firsthand,” she said in a statement. “As Secretary Noem continues to lie, obstruct Congress, and violate people’s civil rights, the support for her impeachment only grows.
Kelly unveiled three articles of impeachment against Noem last Wednesday, accusing her of obstruction of Congress, violating public trust and self-dealing. The names of all the Democrats supporting her effort are here.
As she builds support for her resolution, Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee are pushing for a separate, panel-led investigation into Noem. Rep. Delia Ramirez (D-Ill.) released a new letter, signed by 71 Democrats, demanding the committee immediately hold hearings into Noem’s “unlawful and potentially impeachable actions.”
Ramirez’s effort is key because an investigation by the judiciary panel is the first step in a formal impeachment process.
Neither of these developments might matter much right now, with Republicans in control of the House and Senate. But if Democrats win control of the House in November, which they’re currently in a strong position to do, they could channel the momentum behind these efforts into swift action against Noem.
