Democratic strategist James Carville pitied House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) on Wednesday as a “tragic figure” he predicts will be demoted after the midterms in November.
“He’s kind of a tragic figure in all of this. I really believe that,” Carville said on an episode of “The Jim Acosta Show” posted Wednesday. “I’ve attacked him … numerous times before. Yeah, I don’t think it’s what he would say, the Christian thing to do here. I think we should give him a nice burial, because he’s dead.”
Carville joined Acosta in discussing Trump’s blunt response this week to a question about whether “Americans’ financial situations are motivating” him to end his war in Iran.
“Not even a little bit,” the president responded. “The only thing that matters when I’m talking about Iran, they can’t have a nuclear weapon.”
A number of Republicans defended Trump, including Johnson, who once again brushed off a controversial comment by the president.
“I don’t know the context in which he made that comment, but I can tell you the president thinks about Americans’ financial situations,” the Louisiana Republican said. “I talk to him, on average, twice a day, sometimes three or four times a day, and we talk about it constantly.”
Carville, a Louisiana native, admitted, “I don’t much care for Mike Johnson,” and claimed that the House speaker “knows he’s going to be out in November.”
“He’s trying to just cobble together something and just keep himself from being humiliated in public, and he’s not gonna be able to stop it,” Carville said.
He also told Acosta during the episode that Trump doesn’t care if members of his Republican Party get reelected or not.
“It’s the last thing that he cares about,” Carville said, adding that Republicans have “entered into a marriage where they want to keep it together, and the other partner in the marriage doesn’t give a crap.”
