In summary:Samsung’s Android laptop ambitions

In summary:

  • Tech Advisor reports Samsung is developing new Galaxy Book laptops running Android 17 with One UI 9, spanning low-end to flagship tiers.
  • These Android-powered laptops will feature enhanced Samsung DeX for desktop-like functionality and heavily integrate Galaxy AI across the product line.
  • This strategic move aims to create a unified ecosystem similar to Apple’s approach, potentially merging Samsung’s mobile and laptop experiences.

Samsung is apparently working on new Galaxy Book laptops that will run on Android and One UI rather than Windows.

The South Korean tech giant already has a strong foothold in laptops, and makes some of the better (dare I say MacBook-esque?) Windows laptops on the market.

Now, it’s looking to consolidate by producing laptop products that run on Google’s mobile OS, according to a new report from SamMobile

The website claims that a range of Samsung Galaxy Books is in production that run on Android 17-based software, with Samsung’s own One UI 9 layered on top.

This isn’t quite the outlandish development it might appear to be, when you consider that Samsung already makes (and has for some years) Galaxy Chromebooks, which run on Google’s ChromeOS.

It’ll almost certainly be transitioning that product line to run on the new version of ChromeOS, aka Aluminium OS, which will be based on Android.

Samsung’s Android laptop ambitions

It seems Samsung is seeking a more consistent (dare we say Apple-esque?) experience right across its product line-up. The company has gone to great pains to make the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra play nicely with Windows laptops, but that can’t hope to match the synergistic potential of running the same OS on everything.

In particular, the report claims that the new Android laptops will feature an improved version of Samsung DeX, which converts its mobile devices to run a more desktop-like environment.

The report claims that Samsung is looking into three tiers of Android-based laptops, targeting the low-end, mid-range, and flagship categories. So at least one will rival the MacBook Neo.

Whatever the approach, expect all of Samsung’s new laptops to go big on Galaxy AI. This has been a major focus for all of its smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches in recent years.

There’s no timeline on these new Android laptops from Samsung, though we would expect Google to announce something on its Android 17 and ChromeOS plans at Google I/O next month.

Might we have some Samsung hardware running on Android 17 released before the end of the year? Here’s hoping.
