Beaches and pickleball courts will soon be jam-packed across Florida, but it’s not just Miami and the cluster of sunny paradises surrounding Tampa that have become vacation hotspots.

Small towns are rising to stardom as more vacationers hope to score front row seating with crashing waves at their feet, their favorite cocktail in hand, and a new book you may never open, but hey, at least you set a goal to be productive.

The truth is, it’s a tough task to find crowd-free getaways nowadays, but travelers have taken note of one little-known coastal haven that’s safe to say is Florida’s trendiest beach town.

Long before airlines began making a base here, this laid-back hideaway was a tight-lipped secret for being Florida’s other Disney destination that’s immeasurably more peaceful than the soundtrack of screaming kiddos in the world’s ‘happiest place’.

Now, the Disney allure is amplified, but it’s a full-fledged vacation destination that still feels “local”, offering gorgeous blue-green waters and sprawling swaths of spacious shores for those who prefer avoiding breakneck big cities and spring break shenanigans.

Believe it or not, Orlando doesn’t have a monopoly on Florida’s Disney adventures.

Vero Beach, lying on the Atlantic coast near other relatively unknown barrier islands and neighboring coastal charmers, is the state’s other Disney destination.

Home to Disney’s Vero Beach Resort, an official Disney Vacation Club resort, the magic is only increasing as its full glow-up is almost complete, with the lounge being the last of the major upgrades set to reopen in August 2026.

Located about 2 hours south of world-famous Disney World, this calmer getaway straddling the Treasure Coast may not have dizzying teacups, but it does offer Disney devotees a calmer coastal retreat with spacious beaches and no need for a Fast Pass.

But you can still bring home your favorite character by grabbing a souvenir at the on-site Island Grove Packing Company.

If you’re around come summertime, the biggest draw is the resort’s sea turtle conservation efforts claimed to be ‘the most important turtle-nesting habitats in the western hemisphere’.

Vero Beach Is Growing But Still Feels Local

We get it — anyone who has planted their proverbial flag in their beloved hometown doesn’t want it to become overly touristy.

So far, so good for Vero Beach.

While Disney’s resort and highly-touted Kimpton are outliers, the rest of town is still brimming with local eateries, mom-and-pop inns, and boat owners mingling at the marina.

Vero Beach is home to 2 bodies of water to enjoy — the Atlantic, obviously, as well as the Indian River.

If you love the outdoors but aren’t the type to daze into the abyss of the Atlantic all day from a beachside lounger, you can explore the Indian River by kayak or paddleboard before

With no other major destination in close distance, Vero Beach is still worlds away from much of Florida’s frenzy, though a bit more upmarket with pricey spas and trendy wine bars, even earning the moniker of ‘the Hamptons of Florida’.

Overall, you’ll find a slower-paced, cozy small town, yet still offering Florida must-dos like tiki bars and endless sun-drenched beach days.

Rowdy spring breakers tend to skip Vero in favor of Cocoa Beach, for example. Therefore, there’s really no bad time to visit.

But July to September is when temps often topple 90 degrees, while spring sees more tolerable highs of 79 to 86 degrees on average.

Best of all, though Vero Beach may be cozy, it’s not a boring retiree haven. Data shows most tourists are between 25 – 47 years old.

New Flights Put Vero Beach On Travelers’ Radar

A JetBlue plane flying

Just a few years ago, Vero Beach was off the beaten path for most since the airport’s commercial service was nonexistent.

That all changed in 2023 when Breeze Airways took over. Ever since, 2 more powerhouse airlines joined the party:

  • American Airlines
  • JetBlue

In total, travelers can now fly nonstop to Vero Beach from 10 U.S. cities with the fairly recent JetBlue launch from Boston and the impending Breeze route from Raleigh (set to launch May 6, 2026).
