There’s no point sugarcoating it: whether you like it or not, America’s reputation in Europe isn’t exactly glowing right now.

From the ever-so-often diplomatic rifts, to U.S. tourists reporting not feeling welcome across a number of European cities (fancy getting chased down the calle by a water-pistol-wielding Catalan, anyone?) and of course, the mounting piles of added bureaucracy when it comes to travel.

Not keeping up with the news? Soon enough, Americans will need to request (and pay for) a pre-flight authorization just to visit the Old Continent.

Alas, even the U.S. passport is getting weaker in terms of global mobility. A.k.a. the number of countries you can visit without a visa.

2026 has been a wild ride, but despite the grim headlines, there’s one European country in particular that has refused to implement stricter travel rules targeting the ‘yanks‘—as they say, blood is thicker than water, and family will always have your back when needed.

Ireland Still Welcomes Americans With Open Arms

Dublin Castle, Ireland

According to a Tourism Ireland | RED C joint study, Americans are currently the second-most important tourism market for the country, behind only Great Britain.

They’re more numerous than Germans, the French, Spaniards, Italians, and way behind, Canadians, with some of the other key findings being:

  • 70% of the targeted audiences intend to visit Ireland ‘some time’, with an intention to fulfil that within ‘the next two years’
  • 79% have declared ‘exploration’ as the main drive
  • 67% voted ‘the ability to disconnect’ as the second-most influential factor in choosing a destination
  • 50% (more or less) declared that ‘good value’ is paramount

Let’s break these down, shall we?

Behold The Glorious Emerald Isle

When it comes to ‘exploring’, there’s truly only a handful of island-nations in Europe that can stand beside Ireland in terms of richness of heritage, diverse scenery, and cultural offer.

I’m not the fiercest Dublin defender out there, granted, but that’s not to say I don’t love Ireland.

Through many years of visiting the country, and even temporarily-living on the Causeway Coast, I’ve had the opportunity to check off most of its bucket-list sights, and hyped-up as they may be, it’s truly mind-blowing stuff…

If it’s on a sunny day.

I’ll bet my bottom dollar on the fact that the mythical Cliffs of Moher will be on every American’s wishlist if they’re headed to Ireland this year. I’m not here to dismiss it as some tourist trap—well, it sort of is, though it’s not one bit less stunning—but if you’re looking for jaw-dropping beauty, head north to Donegal.

Rugged cliffs running along a tempestuous Atlantic, solitary farmer’s bungalows on the edge of remote Northern beaches, and some of that good old Gaelic craic.

A must-see, you ask?

Malin Head, the postcard-ready Northernmost tip of Ireland (just be careful as you walk along those cliffs).

The lake-sprinkled Connemara, with its great mounds and wildlife, is all the quiet weekend cottage escape you need, and for that epic roadtrip with (yet more) epic coastal scenery for a destination, drive north towards Northern Ireland’s Causeway Coast.

It’s where iconic landmarks such as the Giant’s Causeway and the scenic, cliffside Dunluce Castle are located.

Fairytale Castles Everywhere You Go

Still on the topic of ‘exploration’, there’s no discussion of Ireland without mentioning its plethora of well-preserved medieval forts, traditional hinterland villages peppered with locally owned chippies, and family-centered locals.

For that fairytale village that receives a mere fraction of the usual hordes, head to Cashel, home to the famous Rock of Cashel, a medieval complex with a ruined cathedral at its center, where Irish kings were once coronated.

The views of lush fields, as far as the eye can see, from atop the citadel are nothing short of breathtaking.

Perhaps the prettiest small town in Ireland, Cobh is surely not to be missed, either: a harbor town with colorful houses backed by a soaring Neo-Gothic church, it was a port of call on the Titanic’s maiden and final voyage.

The Anti-Dublin

The classic Belfast city hall building with columns and cupolas on Donegall square, the headquarters of city council

Speaking of the Titanic, I may take some heat for saying this, but I feel Belfast is miles more exciting and full of character than Dublin.

The capital of Northern Ireland, it is the birthplace of the Titanic itself, and its ship-hull-shaped museum is probably in my top 5 favorites I’ve ever visited. Think Titanic relics, interactive displays, and enthralling audio recordings from survivors.

Plus, you get to visit the SS Nomadic, Titanic’s surviving tender: used to transport passengers from smaller ports to the ship itself, it’s probably the closest you can get today to being in the Titanic, or at least an original, Titanic-related vessel, without… hem… imploding at the bottom of the ocean.

Belfast, Northern Ireland

On top of that, Belfast is infinitely better than Dublin for pub-crawling—the 18th-century McHughs should definitely feature on your to-go list—and the somewhat unresolved Troubles tensions, with parts of the city still clearly divided by walls, reflecting religious affiliation, is just outright fascinating.

Just two little warnings, if I may?

  1. Read extensively on Belfast’s, and Northern Ireland’s complex history before visiting. You don’t want to anger the wrong drunken Nationalist local or a pious Loyalist
  2. Make sure you get a UK ETA before visiting Northern Ireland, even if there are no actual borders with the Republic of Ireland. It is part of the United Kingdom, and Americans now need pre-authorization to enter

Ireland Isn’t Jumping On The European ETA Bandwagon

Speaking of ETAs, this ties in perfectly with our next point.

Despite not being directly addressed in the latest research, we’ll take a Wild Atlantic guess and infer Americans are still cozy with their Irish buddies because they’re not implementing harsher visa rules anytime soon.

While most of Europe has resorted to mandatory ETAs, which can bar you from traveling unless you’re pre-screened in advance, Ireland has no plans to introduce a similar system. Which, let’s face it, is pretty much an eVisa.

In order to fly to London, or board the train from Dublin (IE), to Belfast (UK), you need to present proof of a valid UK ETA, an online authorization tied to your passport, at the cost of $21.50 (roughly).

In modern travel history, Americans have not needed visas or eVisas to visit Ireland: simply presenting a valid passport, with at least 3 months of validity left from the date of departure, usually suffices.

As I said, familial ties run deep, and the Irish are, in general, very welcoming towards their extended family from across the pond.

As we head into a new era of tougher entry rules for U.S. citizens, Ireland will remain the sole country in the European Union to not have an ETA in place—as it’s not in Schengen, it’s not obliged to implement the upcoming ESTA—nor any of the extra hurdles that come with it.

Fly in, get stamped upon arrival (or maybe even that’s being phased out), and enjoy up to 90 days of legal stay in the Emerald Isle.

Is Ireland ‘Value For Money’?

Now, this one here reads a bit funny to me, as the research has found that travelers are looking for ‘value for money’ when visiting Europe.

Not to beat around the bohsh (does this sound like a transliterated Dublin accent?), Ireland is hella expensive, whether it’s the overrated capital, or the magical countryside.

On average, ordering a pint of Guinness from a casual will cost you upwards of $6.50—it may be much-higher in Dublin—a basic meal deal with a sandwich, some salad, and a soft drink ranges from $12 to $18, and mid-range accommodation is a jarring $100–$180 (often on the pricier end).

That cheeky wee Leprechaun’s surely stacking up on the gold, I’ll tell you that much.

But again, I sort of get where they’re coming from? After all, these potential visitors were queried on Ireland in the context of Northern European destinations, not exactly the far-more affordable Southern or Southeastern Europe.

When paired with close neighbors England, Norway, or even Switzerland (features in the study despite being in Central Europe), local prices can indeed look less egregious.

Be that as it may, the most important thing is that they felt the experiences were ‘worth’ the value, and unless you’re just in Dublin for a long-weekend of wallet-bleeding and dodging knife attacks along the Liffey, one could argue Ireland definitely doesn’t disappoint.

Trinity college, Dublin, Ireland

I will say they may be reaching when 70% report food on Ireland to be ‘good’.

I’d say it’s very hit and miss myself, but hey, I’m a Mediterranean kiddo. I do enjoy fish & chips every now and then, but I do typically prefer my fish drenched in olive oil and not covered in a thick cast of batter.
