Chappell Roan may have only made her Met Gala debut last year, but “your favorite artist’s favorite artist” has already made a distinct impression. While crafting a look for fashion’s biggest night might have been a daunting task for any other first-timer, Roan confidently took an untraditional route. The result? A perfectly flamboyant and 100% original fuchsia creation.
For the evening’s dress code, “Tailored for You,” the singer turned to Oscar Award-winning costume designer Paul Tazewell. (You may recognize his work in the recent Wicked movies.) Tazewell, in partnership with Roan’s longtime stylist Genesis Webb, sourced vintage materials directly from eBay. “I wanted to channel that same spirit through the language of Black style—pulling from the boldness of 1970s Blaxploitation, funk, and disco icons like Parliament-Funkadelic and Sylvester, who used fashion as cultural power,” Tazewell said in a post on Instagram.

Tazewell and Webb paired the glittering patchwork jumpsuit with a dramatic matching overcoat, complete with a fuchsia fringe trim. To round off the look, Roan teamed up with fashion’s makeup artist extraordinaire Pat McGrath for the first time. “We channeled the glamour and freedom of the disco era—think Sylvester, Superfly, superfine tailoring, and unapologetic shine,” McGrath told Vogue.
Roan has never been one to shy away from an eccentric look when the moment calls for it, whether that be full Statue of Liberty drag for the 2024 Governor’s Ball, her “Roan of Arc” suit of armor at the 2024 VMAs, or a full Black Swan/White Swan moment from Gunnar Deatherage for an appearance on Jimmy Fallon. Nothing is too bold or too camp. Recall, if you will, when she “bared” all with prosthetics in an archive-inspired Mugler nipple-pierced dress at the 2026 Grammys or when she sported a latex sex doll suit from Mariano Cortez on RuPaul’s Drag Race.
