Atlanta Named The No. 1 Summer Travel Destination in the United States for 2026

Metro Atlanta has claimed the top spot on WalletHub’s annual ranking of the best U.S. summer travel destinations, edging out Orlando and Austin as American travelers prepare for a season shaped by rising costs and growing demand for affordable getaways.

The findings, published this week by the personal finance website WalletHub, are based on an analysis of 100 of the most populated metro areas across 41 indicators spanning travel costs, local expenses, attractions, weather, activities, and safety.

Why Atlanta Topped the List

The report credited Atlanta’s win primarily to accessibility and value. WalletHub analysts specifically noted the ranking focused on affordability and convenience rather than scenic quality, though Atlanta ranked highly in activities and attractions.

Atlanta’s late-night entertainment scene also earned a specific mention, with analysts pointing to the city’s generous last call times as a draw for visitors seeking a full summer experience.

The city’s connectivity advantage is well-established. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport handled 108 million total passengers in a recent year — roughly 20 million more than its nearest competitor — and offers more than 150 domestic and 70 international nonstop routes.

Atlanta’s ranking arrives as the city prepares for an exceptionally busy summer. Atlanta will host eight FIFA World Cup 2026 matches at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, with official fan zones, live broadcasts, and neighborhood watch parties expected to draw visitors from around the world. The Atlanta History Center is also set to open a new Civil War-era exhibition this summer, adding to the city’s cultural calendar.

WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo noted the broader context driving the rankings: “Choosing a destination that’s not only entertaining but also affordable is important when travel, dining and activity costs have surged so much in recent years. It can also allow you to have a longer, more relaxing trip.”

That context is significant. Domestic airfare is currently running roughly 19 percent higher than the same period last year, with median round-trip prices climbing from $412 to $489 — making Atlanta’s low-cost flight access an increasingly meaningful differentiator.

The Rest of the Rankings

Orlando, Florida, claimed second place, with WalletHub citing nonstop flights available from around $373 and three-star hotel rooms as low as $49 per night, alongside its world-famous theme parks, water parks, and dining options. Austin, Texas, rounded out the top three for its affordable restaurants, outdoor attractions, and relatively low cost of living.

At the bottom of the rankings, WalletHub identified Lansing, Michigan, McAllen, Texas, and Ventura, California as the least favorable destinations for summer 2026.
