Is there a more creatively-stimulating city than New York? Our metropolis is an endless reference for designer collections—its stylish locals, with their knack for putting together cool-yet-nonchalant looks, providing endless fodder. New York street style is what inspired Tommy Hilfiger’s new fall assortment: The designer wanted to embed his classically preppy pieces with a more New York attitude, and he revived some key items from his archives to do so.
For her, a silky blouse featured a geometric pattern lifted from one of his archival menswear ties. A bright green crewneck—almost Brat green, even—was inspired by the green lining of a built-in pen holder found on one of his archival pieces, too.
For the most part, the collection read as classic Tommy—with loads of jeans, great coats, and striped shirting in his familiar shades of red, blue, and white. The straight-leg, medium-wash denim felt right for the moment, as did his boxier cotton jackets, some adorned with faux fur collars. (Love it or hate it, fur is back in a big way.)
On the menswear front, meanwhile, he took dressy closet staples—the double-breasted suit, the collared dress shirt—and gave them an off-duty feel with more casual pieces, like green cargo pants, or sporty varsity jackets. His colorful cable knit quarter-zips and fair isle knits continue to be best-sellers, so why not double-down on them? Overall, the collection could have been riskier, but when it comes to New Yorker style, it’s all in the creative styling, and Hilfiger delivered pieces that are easy to make look good.
