How Niacinamide Works in Your SkinDo All Sensitive Skincare Products Have Niacinamide? How Do I Know If My Skin Will Tolerate Niacinamide?Ingredients to Avoid Mixing with Niacinamide

Especially with sensitive skin, there are plenty of reasons to focus on what ingredients are in your products. But, with an overwhelming amount of ingredients across all skincare products, there are simply too many ingredients to focus on avoiding. According to the Pew Research Center, 82% of Americans are concerned about exposure to harsh chemicals in cosmetics.

Instead of focusing on the laundry list of chemicals to avoid, start with prioritizing products with ingredients that nourish and repair your skin.

Niacinamide is a form of Vitamin B3 that works to reduce inflammation, support the skin barrier, and widen space between keratin molecules to improve elasticity.

How Niacinamide Works in Your Skin

Niacinamide builds proteins in the skin and locks in moisture to prevent damage beneath the skin barrier. A niacinamide eye cream, for example, will strengthen the thin skin barrier under your eyes where moisture needs to be replenished the most. The skin around your eye is the most sensitive skin on your face and needs gentler, more focused care. Niacinamide regulates oil, reduces inflammation, and even protects against environmental toxins where the skin is most prone to reacting.

Do All Sensitive Skincare Products Have Niacinamide?

Using niacinamide in your skincare products seems like a no-brainer. But, not all products boasted to be “clean” and formulated for “sensitive skin” include this form of Vitamin B3. Finding skincare products with niacinamide included within the ingredients on the packaging helps you eliminate product candidates that you may have chosen, especially if you have tricky, easily-reactive skin.

How Do I Know If My Skin Will Tolerate Niacinamide?

Patch or spot testing is always the best way to determine whether your skin will tolerate niacinamide. To do a patch test, apply a small amount of product in a discreet spot of sensitive skin, such as behind your ear. Do this daily for several days in a row and note if the skin in that area reacted to the product application.

A skin reaction does not always show up right away. In some cases, it can take 24-48 hours for a reaction to occur. You may notice itchiness that makes you want to scratch the sensitive area, or burning that is more than just a tingling sensation. Redness or dry skin can also be signs of a bad reaction. Blemishes are not uncommon when your skin reacts poorly to an ingredient, even if you expect a skincare product to reduce acne.

Ingredients to Avoid Mixing with Niacinamide

If you want to incorporate niacinamide products into your skincare routine, make sure you do not have products in your routine with ingredients that react poorly when combined. There are several ingredients you should not mix with niacinamide, including:

● Exfoliating acids, such as salicylic acid and glycolic acid

● Benzoyl peroxide

● Alcohol-based toners

● AHAs/BHAs

The ingredients you should and should not mix with niacinamide also depends on your skin type. Consulting with a dermatologist is the best way to understand what kind of skin type you have, and whether you are prone to certain sensitive skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis.
