The U.S. Embassy has issued a new alert to all Americans traveling south of the border down to Mexico this summer. Border security will be tighter than ever, and heightened inspections will be in full force as Mexico hosts the World Cup over the next five weeks. With millions of international visitors pouring into the country, customs agents at every major airport and land crossing are on extremely high alert. Whether you are flying down for a relaxing week at an all-inclusive resort, exploring historic downtown districts, or attending massive sporting events, you are going to face massive crowds and incredibly strict luggage checks.

U.S. Issues New Travel Alert For Mexico To NOT Pack These 3 Items Amid Strict Border Screening

If you are packing your bags for a summer getaway, you need to be highly aware of what is sitting inside your suitcase. There are specific items that will get you in deep trouble at the border. Authorities are not giving out warnings or second chances right now. If you break the rules, even by total accident, you are looking at severe penalties, massive financial fines, or genuine jail time.

Here are the top three items you must absolutely leave at home, plus a few extra tips to keep your summer trip completely hassle-free.

1. Weapons and Ammunition Are Strictly Forbidden

First and foremost, do not bring any weapons or ammunition into Mexico. This might sound like common sense to most beachgoers, but it is a massive issue for a surprising number of everyday travelers who drive across the border or fly with bags they regularly use back home for hunting or going to the shooting range.

Bringing a gun or ammo into the country is a very serious crime. It absolutely does not matter if you have a valid concealed carry permit in your home state, and it does not matter if you are a highly responsible owner back in the United States. American gun ownership permits mean absolutely nothing the second you cross into Mexican territory. If customs officers find a weapon, or even a single stray bullet rattling around in the bottom of your backpack, you will face severe legal penalties and an immediate trip to a local jail. The border agents are not going to listen to excuses, so leave all the protection locked up at home.

2. Leave Your Special Prescriptions Behind

The second major warning revolves around drug possession and importation. You absolutely cannot bring any illegal substances into the country, and this strictly includes medical marijuana.

Even if you live in a U.S. state where marijuana is completely legalized for recreational use, and even if you have a legitimate, doctor-issued medical permit, it is highly illegal to bring it into Mexico. The border agents do not care about the local laws in California, New York, or Colorado. If you are caught trying to bring in any form of marijuana—whether it is flower, edibles, gummies, or concentrated oils—it can easily lead to long jail sentences or devastating financial fines.

Do not try to hide it in your checked luggage, as the scanning equipment and canine units are highly active right now due to the massive summer crowds. If you need specific everyday medications, you need to ensure your basic prescriptions are actually legal south of the border before you pack them. We flew into Mexico City yesterday and we have never seen customs so strict. Multiple dogs were sniffing every single bag while dozens of travelers were having their bags inspected.

3. The Complete Ban On Vapes and E-Cigarettes

This is the specific rule that catches the most everyday travelers completely off guard. It is entirely illegal to bring e-cigarettes and vaping liquids into Mexico.

The country passed a strict federal ban on the import and sale of all vaping products a few years ago. If you pack your favorite vape pen or a few extra flavor pods in your carry-on bag, customs agents will flag them during your luggage scan. Best case scenario, they just throw your expensive vape straight in the trash and give you a harsh warning. Worst case scenario, you are hit with a massive fine right there in the terminal before you even make it outside to your airport shuttle. Do yourself a massive favor and leave the e-cigarettes sitting on your kitchen counter at home. Recent traveler reports to Travel Off Path have quoted fines up to $400.

Check Every Single Pocket

The excuse of “I forgot it was in there” is never going to save you from getting in trouble. You must thoroughly check your bags, backpacks, and clothing pockets before leaving for the airport.

If you use a specific backpack for hunting or going to the range, make absolutely sure there is not a stray shell buried in a side pocket. If you normally carry a vape in your favorite jacket, double-check the pockets before you pack it in your suitcase. Bringing in banned items will result in serious penalties, even if it was a completely honest accident. Customs agents just deal with what is actually sitting inside your bag when it goes through the x-ray machine.

Taking the time to completely empty your luggage before you start packing is the smartest move you can make. Shake out your backpacks, check the hidden compartments, and look through every single zipper. It sounds tedious, but it is the only way to guarantee you do not accidentally bring a banned item across the border.

Extra Actions To Take For A Safe Trip

Beyond the banned items list, there are a few key actions every traveler should take to navigate the massive crowds smoothly this summer.

Be sure to check all the latest Travel Advisories and Alerts for your destination before heading to the airport.

First, double-check your passport right now. Make sure it is not expired and is in good condition, because you cannot board an international flight without it.

Next, limit the amount of cash you carry on you. When you need to withdraw funds, be extremely cautious and completely avoid using isolated ATMs on the street. Stick to ATMs inside secure banks or right inside your resort lobby where security is present. When it comes to getting around the city, only use official airport taxi stands or trusted app-based services to avoid any transportation scams.

Tell your friends and family about your travel plans, especially if you are traveling alone. Sharing your flight details and hotel reservations gives everyone peace of mind. If you are renting a car to explore beyond the resort zones, make a strict rule to drive only during daylight hours.

Finally, if your summer plans are taking you down to the beautiful beaches of Quintana Roo—like Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, or Cozumel—download the official “Guest Assist” app. This app is specifically designed for tourists and gives you instant access to emergency services and reliable assistance in English.

The next few weeks are going to be an incredible time to visit Mexico. Just pack smart, double-check your bags, and get ready for the trip of a lifetime. You can read the full alert by the U.S. Embassy here.
