ROME — The United States Embassy in Italy has issued a travel advisory ahead of major demonstrations expected to draw tens of thousands of participants in central Rome on Saturday, November 22, 2025.
According to the Embassy’s alert, an estimated 30,000 people will gather at 3:00 p.m. at Piazza della Repubblica before marching toward Piazza di Porta San Giovanni. The march, which aims to raise awareness and demand an end to gender-based violence, is scheduled to conclude by 8:00 p.m.
Italian authorities anticipate a strong police presence throughout the city center to manage the flow of participants and ensure public safety. While organizers have described the demonstration as peaceful, officials caution that large crowds may lead to traffic disruptions and temporary transit delays.
The U.S. Embassy advised Americans in Rome to avoid areas affected by the march and to remain vigilant. Travelers are urged to exercise caution, remain aware of their surroundings, and monitor local news for real-time updates.
“Individuals should utilize good situational awareness, maintain control of personal belongings, and attempt to leave any affected areas immediately,” the Embassy stated in its advisory.
The demonstration coincides with global events marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, a day observed annually on November 25.
Public transportation, including bus and metro routes passing through the city center, may experience rerouting or delays during the demonstration hours.
Why are the protests happening?
The main reason for these protests is to demand an end to gender-based violence, timed to coincide with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25.
The demonstration in Rome is part of a coordinated national movement led by the feminist group Non Una di Meno and seeks to draw public attention to the persistent issue of violence against women and patriarchal structures in Italy.
Organizers describe their rally as transfeminist and intersectional, aiming to highlight the need for legislative changes and greater societal commitment to combating all forms of gender-related abuse and discrimination. In the days leading up to the event, several cultural and educational activities focused on these themes are also taking place across the city.
