Spring is hands-down my favorite time to hit the U.S. National Parks. The crowds haven’t peaked yet, the weather is actually manageable, and the landscapes completely transform.

If you are planning a trip this year, I have some massive news: the National Park Service has finally ditched those annoying, park-wide timed-entry reservation systems for 2026 in places like Yosemite and Arches. Instead, they are moving toward hyper-local micro-permits for specific crowded trails.

This year is also shaping up to be an absolutely legendary season for wildflowers. Thanks to some freak winter rainstorms, the American Southwest is exploding with color, while the East Coast is delivering its classic, dense forest blooms.

If you want to see the best botanical shows in the country this spring, here are the 5 parks you need to prioritize, along with the new 2026 rules you need to know before you go.

1. Death Valley National Park, California

The Decadal Superbloom

Death Valley is the hottest, driest place in North America, but right now, it is undergoing a spectacular transformation. Thanks to a massive winter deluge (the park got 202% more rain than usual in just three months), the protective waxy coatings on millions of dormant seeds dissolved. We are currently seeing the biggest “superbloom” since 2016.

The Vibe: The valley floor is completely carpeted in vibrant yellow Desert Gold and purple Phacelia. It is a stunning contrast against the normally barren, salt-crusted landscape.

The Strategy: You have to stick to the paved roads (Highway 190 and Badwater Road are your best bets). Do not, under any circumstances, drive your rental car off-road to get a better photo. The tire tracks crush the fragile desert crust and permanently destroy the seed banks for future decades. Also, note that Titus Canyon and Darwin Falls roads are completely washed out and closed for the season.

2. Saguaro National Park, Arizona

The Cactus Climax

Saguaro is uniquely split right down the middle by the city of Tucson into a West district and an East district. Because the Sonoran Desert gets both winter rain and summer monsoons, it has an incredibly diverse bloom cycle that changes depending on when you arrive.

The Vibe: Right now, the lower elevations are covered in bright Mexican Gold Poppies and Desert Lupine. But the real show happens in May.

The Strategy: Time your trip for mid-to-late May to catch the climax. That is when the park’s namesake—the giant Saguaro cacti—finally bloom. They produce massive, creamy-white flowers at the very top of their arms that open at night to attract bats and close by midday. It is one of the coolest, most predictable ecological events in the Southwest.

3. Joshua Tree National Park, California

The Elevation Chaser

Joshua Tree is basically a massive ramp where two different deserts smash into each other. The Colorado Desert sits low and hot in the south, while the Mojave Desert sits high and cool in the north. Because of this elevation gradient, the wildflower bloom literally crawls up the mountains over the course of the spring.

The Vibe: You can chase the blooms. In March, hang out in the low Pinto Basin to see bright blue Desert Canterbury Bells. By April and May, move up to the 4,000-foot mark around Jumbo Rocks to see the actual Joshua Trees surrounded by yellow Brittlebush.

The Strategy: When you are hiking, stay strictly on the trail. The dirt here is held together by “cryptobiotic crust”—a living layer of bacteria and moss that anchors the sand. If you step on it, you instantly destroy decades of growth. Also, keep in mind that the popular 49 Palms Oasis trail is closed on weekdays this spring for trail repairs.

4. Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee/North Carolina

The Forest Race

With over 1,500 species of flowering plants, this is officially the “Wildflower National Park.” The dynamic here is completely different from the desert. The flowers in the Smokies are in a frantic evolutionary race to bloom, get pollinated, and drop their seeds before the massive oak and maple trees leaf out and block all the sunlight from hitting the forest floor.

The Vibe: Walking the lower elevation trails (like Porters Creek) in April feels like a fairy tale. The ground is carpeted in white Trilliums, Spring Beauties, and Bloodroot.

The Strategy: You need to know about the new “Park It Forward” rule for 2026. While entering the park is still free, you now absolutely must buy a $5 daily parking tag if you are going to park your car anywhere for more than 15 minutes. You cannot use your annual America the Beautiful pass for this. Also, double-check your hiking routes; Hurricane Helene washed out several bridges on the Caldwell Fork and Boogerman trails.

5. Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

The Skyline Gradient

Shenandoah is defined by Skyline Drive, a 105-mile paved road that runs directly along the spine of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Because the road is high up, but the hiking trails dip deep into the valleys, you can essentially travel back and forth through the spring season just by changing your elevation.

The Vibe: In April, the lower river valleys are flooded with nodding Virginia Bluebells. By May and June, the higher elevations along Skyline Drive explode with Mountain Laurel and Wild Azaleas.

The Strategy: If you want to hike the iconic Old Rag mountain, you have to plan ahead. Shenandoah has implemented a strict micro-permit system for this specific trail to stop overcrowding. You have to buy a $2 day-use ticket on Recreation.gov in advance. The trail is capped at 800 people per day, and there is zero cell service at the trailhead, so you cannot buy it when you get there.
