But there’s one gem in particular that’s beginning to make a name for itself, making 2026 the perfect time to visit.
Almuñécar Is On The Rise!
Teetering somewhere between “hidden gem” and Spaniards’ favorite getaway lies the unsung coastal charmer of Almuñécar.
While Easter weekend had this virtually unknown town packed to the gills, the rest of the year tends to see fluctuating crowd levels across its nearly 20 beaches.
Right now is the sweet spot to enjoy what’s becoming a regional hotspot, yet a tight-lipped secret to outsiders.
Boasting the unmissable seaside castle Castillo de San Miguel, which costs less than $5 to visit, a walkable Old Town maze brimming with cozy cafes and narrow-alley bodegas, and of course, etched-in-time buildings transformed into some of Spain’s prettiest beachfront hotels, such as Hotel Casablanca.
While Barcelona, Madrid, and Spain’s most famous islands have pushed back on tourists, this little slice of paradise welcomes visitors with open arms and has largely supported hefty investments, such as infrastructure and security improvements to improve travelers’ overall experience.

Almuñécar Feels More Tropical: 300+ Days Of Sunshine
Spain is one of Europe’s most diverse destinations, but if there’s one reason to hone in on Almuñécar as your next international escape, it’s due to its unique tropical vibes — at least for Spain.
I mean, it is hugging Costa Tropical after all, right?
Sure, food across the nation goes unmatched, but if you want the freshest of fresh mangos and avocados, for example, you’re in the right spot.
Plus, we may not be the best weathermen here at Travel Off Path, but there’s arguably no town sunnier than Almuñécar, said to offer more than 300 days of gleaming sun-kissed coastline.
The scenery is astounding, even beyond the coast, with lush green hills set as a dreamy backdrop for plentiful beach days ahead.
Almuñécar’s Best Beaches
Let’s be honest — tackling one of the municipality’s 18 beaches in one go is a tall task. The point of a beach vacay is to relax, not hop around like your sunny vacay is a checklist.
That said, we’ve done our research with help from TripAdvisor and narrowed Almuñécar’s top 3 beaches, a much more reasonable number to pack into a single trip:
1) Playa de Cantarrijan:
Hey, we’re not here to judge, but travelers ranked this nudist haven as Almuñécar’s top beach. To some, it’s a sight for sore eyes, but most would agree the real eye-catcher is crystal-clear water that’s perfect for snorkeling in this beautiful cove.
2) Playa San Cristobal:
This one is the easiest all-around beach day pick, with clear water and ample restaurants and bars nearby in a more accessible urban setting.
3) Playa Cotobro:
Cotobro feels more like a local hideout, with a quaint shoreline, hillside views, and a calmer atmosphere than Almuñécar’s busy-body beaches.
Getting Here
Obviously, being a mid-size town of roughly 28,000 residents, there’s no airport.
However, Málaga is just an hour away — and Americans can fly here direct from Newark!
The other, less convenient option would be to fly into Granada, also about an hour away. Unfortunately, there are no nonstops from any U.S. Airports.
Of course, Spain is one of the most awe-inspiring countries to explore by train, but there’s no station in Almuñécar.
