Does The Reality Match The Postcards?Beyond The Table Games: What’s The Draw For Atlantic City?Atlantic City’s Biggest Summer In Years

An East Coast icon has fallen, but despite not being in the South, it still plans to rise again.

Holding one of the most battered reputations across the Tri-State region, it can still flash its casinos, boardwalk, and whirling Ferris wheel all it wants.

Not exactly exuding Jersey Shore vibes, nor quintessential Jersey at all, this former bustling playground has long tried to sell itself as the East Coast’s “Las Vegas”.

But few American cities have endured such a dramatic rise-and-fall arc.

That’s right — we’re talking about Atlantic City, a city that likely made you just say to yourself, “oh yeah, I forgot about that place”.

Determined to pull off a full 180-degree comeback, Atlantic City is practically begging for more tourists to pay a visit.

Does The Reality Match The Postcards?

The reality is Atlantic City hasn’t put out the fun-filled vibes you see on its postcards sold in near-empty souvenirs shops.

Its reputation in more recent years is that it’s run down, struggling to draw both big names on stage and regular Joes to its beaches and slots.

Dilapidated buildings, vacant lots, and a little too much evidence of hard times aren’t the welcoming sights you might expect for a city billed for thrill-seekers.

Then again, thrills come in different forms. I’m enthralled playing Wordle every morning, so there’s that…

Safety has been a concern here for visitors, even as its classic beachfront boardwalk seems like a family-friend haven.

Away from the cotton candy stalls, ice cream scoopers, and neon shirts people buy for some odd reason, is a downtown full of eyesores, but the city is undergoing a glow-up with its new tourism campaign highlighting attractions beyond how much to bet on red or black.

The city has some work to do to win vacationers back, especially with so many other Jersey and other Northeast beaches that feel more like paradise destinations under Atlantic City’s current reputation.

Beyond The Table Games: What’s The Draw For Atlantic City?

I don’t know about you, but the first thing I think of when I picture Atlantic City are its Vegas vibes that never quit panned out as planned.

There are still a handful of industry big dogs like Hard Rock and Caesars, but the city is dead-set (and maybe outright stubborn) on promoting its other must-dos.

Obviously, there are always scenic beach days, especially now that summer has finally arrived.

Despite the reputation of being dirty, you might be surprised to know it holds a 4.5 star rating on Google with recent beachgoers claiming things like “Nice time of year to visit – it’s warm enough to lay on the beach, everything is open and hotel rates are affordable during the week”.

But what the city is really banking on are its regional events in hopes to fill up those ‘affordable’ rooms.

With a renewed focus beyond the casino floor, Atlantic City is hoping to reframe itself as a base for exploring South Jersey, catching unexpected shows and concerts, and digging into restaurants that might surprise anyone who still thinks the city peaked with slot machines and buffet lines.

The campaign is pushing:

While the city still needs a cleanup, it’s so far, so good when it comes to drawing big names for a jam-packed summer events calendar.

So good, in fact, it’s reasonable to think Atlantic City might even lure travelers down from New York City.

Here are some of the biggest names worth keeping an eye on if you’re willing to give Atlantic City another shot.

And hey, cheap hotels have healed worse reputations.
