It might be surprising to hear, but Indiana has been placed in the wrong group with Midwest snoozers far too long.
Oftentimes, travelers opt for vibrant cities such as Chicago, St. Louis or ever-so-trendy Columbus, but the proof is in the pudding (or St. Elmo’s famous cocktail sauce in this case) that Indiana is on a record-breaking spree.

Not only is Indianapolis crushing tourism records, but a nearby neighbor nestled along the winding St. Mary’s River has also broken visitor records 2 years running, with no signs of slowing down.
What makes this new hotspot even more awesome is that it still feels undiscovered, a rarity when cities begin to cross the one million passenger benchmark, which this charming getaway came very close to doing with 983,042 total passengers in 2025.
If you want to dig in to the heart of the real Midwest, this waterfront gem is just the place with salt-of-the-earth locals, boundless nature, tourist-friendly prices across the board, and hard-to-find authenticity.
$1 Billion Poured Into Downtown Glow-Up

Fort Wayne may be a name that rings a bell, but hard to place if you scoured a map.
Located at the crux of more popular cities between Indianapolis, Detroit, Cleveland, and aforementioned Columbus, getting here is super easy and makes for a great weekend getaway.
Let’s be honest — some Midwest names we know better just aren’t worthy of a visit (ahem, Des Moines), but Fort Wayne isn’t just scattered tall buildings stacked in the middle of cornfields.
Backed by $1 billion (yes, with a “B’), you can fire off all the Austin Powers quotes you want, but downtown’s current status as a vibrant, trendy spot to sip, savor, and enjoy the outdoors is far from fiction.

It’s the perfect base to explore this highly underrated city — and there’s even more to come in the near future, like the Treeline District, aiming to transform Fort Wayne’s waterfront and undeniably make their city a full-fledged ‘landmark destination’.
With lush riverside parks, locally loved bars and restaurants, and a surprising amount of cool art scene to check out, downtown Fort Wayne is one of the most unsung destinations to discover a city that’s yet to catch the eye of mainstream travelers.
Spring Is A Great Time To Recharge: 30+ Miles Of Trails & Nearby Lakes

Right now, Fort Wayne is in the final chapter of a typical Midwest winter. Adventuring, its well-connected 30+ miles of riverfront trails aren’t the most inviting, with the exception of not having any crowds at all.
Come spring, the whole environment changes, flourishing with greenery and mild weather hovering anywhere from the mid-50s to low-70s, depending on what time of day you visit.
But the surrounding area is just as gorgeous with the urban delights.
For those who prefer to get out on the water instead of taking leisurely strolls or sitting on a restaurant patio taking in the views, there are ample ways to kayak or paddleboard, or even venture outside the city limits.

Such places as Chain O’Lakes State Park, home to a ‘chain’ of small lakes and even cozy cabins to rent, fit the bill perfectly for enjoying Indiana’s quiet side as the state’s 2 largest cities continue to welcome a record number of visitors.
New Flights Put Fort Wayne On The Map
While it’s always a mystery why cities with ‘International Airports’ choose such a name when they have no international flights, there’s no denying that the influx of new flights has helped put Fort Wayne on the map.
Fort Wayne International Airport (FWA) welcomed the following domestic flights in 2025:

- Delta Air Lines added a second daily nonstop flight to Detroit (DTW)
- Allegiant Air launched new nonstop service to Fort Lauderdale (FLL)
- United Airlines expanded service to Chicago (ORD), now operating 4 daily flights
- American Airlines increased seat capacity on its Chicago (ORD) route
Additionally, 2026 is set to see:
• United Airlines is increasing service to Chicago (ORD) from 4 daily flights to 6 starting in April
Fort Wayne Does Have One Blemish
We at Travel Off Path understand no destination is truly flawless. However, we know how important safety is for most travelers, especially when it comes to the lesser-known.

While crime is a fickle topic to report on, the latest data and statistics say Fort Wayne does have a crime rate higher than the national average.
According to NextDoor, “Fort Wayne, IN has a higher overall crime rate (41.05) compared to the national average (33.37), with both violent and property crime rates also exceeding national averages”.
