Cancel the Paris plans. The “New Europe” has arrived.
If you’re dreaming of cobblestone streets, fairytale castles, and delicious, farm-to-table food without all the additives you get in America, Europe is probably at the top of your wishlist for 2026.
But before you click “book” on that ticket to France or Italy, hear us out: the travel map is shifting.
While the usual hotspots are drowning in crowds, three underdog nations are quietly stealing the spotlight. According to new data, these are the 3 fastest-growing destinations in Europe right now—seeing visitor surges of up to 21%—and unless you’ve been paying close attention, you might not have even heard of the number one spot:
Finland

Ok, maybe you’ll need to wait until country number 2 to start getting into the actual hidden gems. According to the World Tourism Organization, the third most rapidly-rising country in Europe at the minute is Finland, with a 17% increase in visitors year-on-year.
Famous for its wintertime saunas—steaming room, dip in the ice cold Baltic Sea, back to the steaming room—epic snowy landscapes (dog sledding through Lapland, anyone?), and vibrant city breaks, Finland is all the rage this season.
Not to be missed on your upcoming trip to Finland: the offbeat city of Oulu, crowned one of Europe’s Capitals of Culture recently. Think a vibrant café scene, park trails surrounded by Arctic nature, and a picture-perfect harborfront backed by restored fishermen’s houses and lively bars.
North Macedonia

A landlocked country in the Balkans that’s often overlooked by tourists in favor of much-trendier neighbors like Albania and Croatia, North Macedonia may not have acces to the Adriatic Sea, but it boasts crystal-clear lakes, ancient towns dating back millennia, and NatGeo-worthy nature:
With a 20.6% increase in visitors compared to last year, it’s quickly emerging as one of Europe’s hottest summer destinations. Much of that buzz comes from the laid-back resort town of Ohrid, known for its lakeside beaches and wealth of Byzantine monuments.
Ohrid may be driving North Macedonia’s popularity surge, but if the crowds aren’t your thing, you can opt for a quirky city break in Skopje, a capital with kitschy statues and Ottoman-style bazaars, or paddle through the dramatic, limestone-walled Matka Canyon by kayak.
Lithuania

Officially Europe’s fastest-growing destination by a tight margin, Lithuania has seen a 21% increase in interest from foreign visitors this year, and though it’s relatively unknown in American circles, we can’t say we’re surprised having covered it for years at this point.
If you’re flying to Lithuania, chances are you’ll be landing in Vilnius, its UNESCO-protected medieval capital, criss-crossed with cobblestone streets and home to the hippy-dominated Užupis. A self-proclaimed artists’ republic, it has its own moral codes and community rules (if you could call it that).
For instance, ‘everyone has the right to love and take care of a cat’, and the ‘dog has the right to be a dog’. Mock constitutions aside, Lithuania”s compact size is precisely what makes it great:

From Vilnius, you can easily reach fairytale castles like the Trakai Island Castle, the lush, lake-dotted Pavilniai Regional Park, or even the ancient capital city of Kernavė, in around 15–45 minutes by car. Small country, endless possibilities.
