MS NOW host Rachel Maddow on Monday praised President Donald Trump for doing one thing right: tanking his own approval rating. She ran through a lengthy list of unpopular policies, citing recent polls and MAGA voters themselves to show people are jumping ship.
“I feel like everybody in the national news media is cottoning now to the fact that Trump’s approval ratings, not just in general, but on specific issues and all the issues that are most important to him, Trump’s approval ratings are just cratering,” said Maddow on her show.
She added, “I feel like the national media is finally sort of figuring that out. You know, that the country, broadly speaking, is really quite sharply against President Trump at this point.”
Maddow noted that even local news outlets in red states have started covering criticism of how he’s handling the economy, affordability and immigration, and went on to play footage of an anti-Trump protest in Tulsa, Oklahoma, that aired Saturday on FOX 23 Tulsa.
The featured demonstrators called for political unity, affordable food prices and “solutions for the homeless.” Susan Young, co-leader of the Indivisible Tulsa County protest, told the outlet, “People don’t like being told how many dolls they should buy for their children.”
Trump has indeed told Americans that they should simply accept his economic policies.
“When that’s the local nightly news in Oklahoma, you know things aren’t going great, my dude,” Maddow said Monday. “In the latest AP [Associated Press] polling, Trump is -36 on the economy: 31% of the country approves of Trump on the economy, 67% disapproves.”
She added, “On health care, it’s even worse: He’s underwater by 40 points. And that poll ended before today, which is the deadline for people to sign up for their health plans under the ACA [Affordable Care Act], which is tens of millions of people in this country.”
Maddow explained that the costs of those health insurance premiums are now “skyrocketing in price” as a result of the GOP’s “big, beautiful” tax and spending bill, and reiterated that Trump’s approval rating in the matter was already dismal before those changes took effect.
She plainly assessed, “Listen, you do unpopular things and you end up unpopular.”
Maddow noted that anti-Trump protests appear to be growing, with frustrations about his deployment of U.S. troops in major cities, cruelty against migrants and deadly military force against alleged drug smugglers in Caribbean and Pacific waters being reflected in the polls.
“People protested against President Trump as he arrived at the Army-Navy game this weekend,” said Maddow. “‘Don’t obey illegal orders.’ ‘No war crimes with my tax dollars.’ ‘Baltimore says no to tyranny.’ People today rolled out a huge, huge photo. Look at that.”
The footage onscreen revealed a massive tarp featuring Trump and sex predator Jeffrey Epstein, who once called Trump his “closest friend” and died while awaiting trial on federal child sex trafficking charges, being unfurled Monday on the National Mall in front of the White House.
She then cited a recent Reuters/Ipsos survey showing only 18% of 4,434 polled U.S. adults believe Trump didn’t know about Epstein’s crimes before they were public — and reminded viewers that more classified documents on the matter are set to be released Friday.
