Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has signed legislation to rename Palm Beach International Airport after President Donald Trump, marking the latest in a growing list of institutions and public assets bearing the president’s name.

The airport, located in West Palm Beach near Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence, will be officially renamed President Donald J. Trump International Airport if final federal approvals are completed. The change is expected to take effect on July 1.

DeSantis Signs Bill to Rename Airport

On Monday, Governor Ron DeSantis approved the bill directing the renaming of the airport, a move widely seen as symbolic of Trump’s strong political and personal ties to Florida.

The decision reinforces Florida’s position as Trump’s political base since he relocated from New York to Palm Beach in 2019.

According to reporting by The Guardian, the legislation is part of a broader trend of naming public institutions and initiatives after the president.

A spokesperson familiar with the process noted: “Before the airport’s name can be changed, a formal request must be submitted to the Federal Aviation Administration,” highlighting that the renaming still requires federal processing and updates to aviation systems.

Federal Approval Still Required

Although the bill has been signed at the state level, the renaming is not yet final. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) must approve the change and update official flight charts, navigation databases, and airport identifiers.

In a related move, Florida Representative Brian Mast has introduced legislation to change the airport’s three-letter code from PBI to DJT, reflecting Trump’s initials.

Signage, digital systems, and aviation documentation would all need to be updated before the new name becomes fully operational.

Part of a Broader Naming Trend

The airport renaming is the latest in a series of initiatives that have attached Trump’s name to public and national assets.

Recent developments include plans for a Trump presidential library in Miami, as well as his name being associated with government programs, naval vessels, and commemorative currency.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Treasury announced that Trump’s signature will appear on U.S. paper currency, a rare move for a sitting president.

Additionally, a commemorative gold coin featuring Trump’s image has been approved as part of celebrations marking the United States’ 250th anniversary.

Trump’s Expanding Presence in Florida

Trump’s connection to Florida has deepened significantly since his move to Mar-a-Lago in 2019.

The Palm Beach area has effectively become the center of his political and personal operations, making the airport renaming both symbolic and practical.

Plans for the proposed presidential library in Miami further reinforce this presence. Concept designs shared publicly depict a large, high-profile complex, underscoring the scale of the project.

Political and Public Reactions

While supporters view the move as a recognition of Trump’s influence and legacy, critics argue that the rapid expansion of naming public institutions after a sitting president raises political and ethical questions.

The renaming also follows previous proposals to attach Trump’s name to major infrastructure projects, including airports and transit hubs in other parts of the United States.

As the July deadline approaches, attention will now shift to federal regulators and whether the final approvals proceed without delay.

If completed, the change will make Palm Beach’s airport one of the most prominent transportation hubs in the country to carry the name of a sitting U.S. president.
