When you have the freedom to live wherever you please, chances are you’re solely scoping out sunny destinations this time of year.

As awesome as it may be to wake up in Europe every day, the next few months aren’t the best time to explore Munich, Prague, and Vienna unless you’re dead set on living out your own Hallmark movie.

Here at Travel Off Path, we’re always on the prowl for sun-kissed paradises and delightful cities beaming not only with sunshine but also with vibrant culture.

As such, we came across an insightful new study we just had to share!

Knocking out any cold-weather locales from their list, we narrowed it down to the top 5 warm-weather destinations that are a seamless fit for digital nomads this winter.

5) Buenos Aires 🇦🇷

Look, we’ll keep it real with you — Argentina is a phenomenal country to call home, and there’s arguably no place more enticing than the bustling capital, Buenos Aires.

While it’s still a huge draw for globetrotting remote workers, this city has lost some of its luster, given that its notorious reputation as being impeccably affordable is no longer validated.

In fact, it’s just as costly as Europe now, if not more. So much for their endless array of steakhouses to savor every meal…

What Buenos Aires does still have going for it is:

  • Easy-to-obtain digital nomad visa (stay up to 180 days)
  • European-esque cityscape with strong cafe culture
  • Reasonable cost of living (no longer dirt cheap)
  • Growing expat community
  • Ample co-working spaces
  • Winters full of sunshine

4) Nicosia 🇨🇾

Samanbahce city quarter of Nicosia, Cyprus

One of Europe’s most far-flung paradises is worth the journey to get there.

Cyprus is known for being super affordable, very safe, stunningly beautiful, and let’s just say it’s almost impossible to score a great meal whipped up with local ingredients and paired with wine.

The downside is you may have heard Cyprus will soon be a Schengen nation, meaning your adventures will now be squeezed.

Yes, you can hop around Europe more freely, but also have tighter restrictions on your allowable stay, putting the kibosh on the prior ‘reset’ loophole.

That being said, the city of Nicosia is highly underrated, often overlooked in favor of pint-sized Paphos and one of Europe’s sunniest cities, Limassol — but the entire country is a warm winter escape.

Nicosia is the largest city on the island and earns high marks for safety, English-speaking, nightlife, and walkability in the city, but it’s also an easy springboard to some of Cyprus’s most famed beaches.

Their digital nomad visa lasts 1 year with the option to renew for a total stay up to 3 years.

3) Kuala Lumpur 🇲🇾

Who would’ve thought Kuala Lumpur is the new “Bangkok”?

Now more visited than Thailand, Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur is slowly but surely becoming a household name, but digital nomads are leading the charge given the city’s endless given the city’s endless buzz, affordability, and blazing-fast internet, captivating culture, and connectivity across Asia.

Malaysia offers a popular DE Rantau Nomad Pass with low income requirements (just $24,000 per year).

This sprawling metropolis is largely considered safe, easy to explore, and welcoming to newcomers. Plus, there’s no shortage of luxe rooftop pools to enjoy the winter sunshine after your Zoom calls.

2) Montevideo 🇺🇾

One of Latin America’s most underrated capitals is also one of the safest. Unlike neighboring countries, Montevideo is pretty laid back with surprisingly nice beaches for an urban setting.

This lesser-known city has been a huge draw for nomads given its homey appeal, rather than the party-first chaos found in flashier South American hotspots.

Nomads have definitely played a part in fueling one of Latin America’s fastest-growing capitals, yet Montevideo still manages to feel uncrowded — and there’s no shortage of reasons to call it home:

  • Idyllic beaches (13-mile coastal promenade)
  • Affordable cost of living
  • Free citywide wifi hotspots (the fastest internet in South America)
  • Thriving nomad community
  • Remarkably safe
  • 80+ degree winters

Not to mention, Uruguay’s digital nomad visa is one of the easiest to obtain.

1) Brasilia 🇧🇷

Cityscape of Brasilia, Brazil

You may know Rio and Sao Paulo, but Brasilia? That’s likely not on your radar…

Brazil’s virtually unknown capital has been named the world’s top sunny destination for digital nomads, but the question you likely want an answer to is if there’s anything to do, or is it a bunch of government buildings making up a cheap place to live?

Nobody wants to travel across the world only to realize they chose a snoozefest.

It’s true that Brasilia is sunny, historically intriguing, and cheap to live in, but what about your days off?

The city may be known for its futuristic skyline and political powerhouses, but scratch the surface and you’ll find a surprisingly social capital built around sun-soaked plazas, leafy parks, and a pretty blue lake locals treat like their beach (Rio is a short flight away).

Brazil does offer a digital nomad visa, and it’s been my absolute favorite country to dip my toes into digital nomad waters, where you can start your day with a robust coffee at a trendy cafe, be embraced by welcoming locals stoked to see you venture anywhere outside Rio, and indulge in quite possibly the most underrated cuisine on Earth.
