Melania Trump bestowed an unexpected pet name on her husband, Donald Trump, during the premiere of her film “Melania” at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday.
The first lady drew loud applause and cheers when she referred to the president as “America’s Director, Donald Trump” while thanking the family, friends and colleagues who she said had helped bring to life the project, which Amazon has controversially spent a reported $75 million on.
Online, however, many critics were quick to suggest that “America’s Dictator” might be a more fitting title.
During her remarks, Melania Trump thanked her husband “for providing our family with a lifetime of experiences that only one could imagine,” and called the premiere a “historic” moment.
She also pushed back against the idea that “Melania” is a conventional documentary, describing it instead as “a very deliberate act of authorship inviting you to witness events and emotions through a window of rich imagery.”
“It is a creative experience that offers perspectives, insights and moments that only few have seen,” she said of the film, which has been subjected to reports of weak advance ticket sales.
“Here, honor, pride and truth are revealed not through narration but through genuine discovery,” she continued. “It is purposeful storytelling.”
“Our story will live on for generations, forever,” she vowed.
