A man was killed and a baby was seriously injured on Friday night after a 19-year-old driver ran a red light, T-boned their car and fled the scene, according to the Aurora Police Department.
Jonathan Garcia was arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of an accident and reckless driving after he ran from the crash near Nome Park, Aurora police said in a news release.
The crash happened at 8 p.m. at the intersection of East 13th Avenue and North Peoria Street when Garcia, driving a Chevrolet Trailblazer southbound on Peoria at high speeds, ran a red light at East 13th Avenue and T-boned a Volvo sedan, police officials said.
Investigators believe Garcia was under the influence of drugs and “possibly” alcohol at the time of the crash, according to the agency.
The Volvo driver was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead, and a 1-year-old in the Volvo was also taken to the hospital and is in serious condition. The Volvo driver will be identified by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office.
Garcia fled on foot after he was confronted by a witness, Aurora police said. Officers tracked him using information from the crash site, surveillance video and a drone that picked up his heat signature in Nome Park.
Garcia is being held without bail at the Arapahoe County Jail. His next court date was not available Saturday.
