A brand new wildfire sparked north of Craig on Friday grew to five,000 acres in a matter of hours, in line with the Bureau of Land Administration and Moffat County Sheriff’s Workplace.
The Iron fireplace was burning on an estimated 5,000 acres as of 6 p.m. and being pushed by excessive winds, mentioned BLM Colorado Communications Director Steven Corridor. The fireplace was reported at 11:56 a.m. and updates from the Moffat County Sheriff’s Workplace earlier within the day estimated the hearth at solely 170 acres.
Crews are working to suppress the hearth, Corridor mentioned, and air firefighting assets are on scene with extra on the best way.
The fireplace is burning in tall grass and sagebrush in a burn scar from 2018, in line with the sheriff’s workplace.
The Nationwide Climate Service’s Grand Junction workplace issued a Purple Flag Warning for many of the Western Slope by Saturday evening, with gusty winds, low humidity and dry fuels anticipated. A Purple Flag Warning means climate situations that may contribute to excessive fireplace conduct are occurring or will quickly, in line with the company.
Winds of 25 to 35 miles per hour with gusts of as much as 45 miles per hour are forecasted.
