Swedish mining and infrastructure equipment maker Epiroc and Ericsson have partnered through a global agreement to expand LTE and 5G connectivity in the mining sector.

Ericsson’s technology will be distributed through Epiroc’s global customer centres, strengthening connectivity and digital solutions in the mining industry.

This initiative targets both underground and surface operations, aiming to support customers in advancing automation, digitalisation, and operational efficiency.

The partnership expands Epiroc’s range of technology-agnostic digital and automation solutions, providing customers with crucial connectivity for safer, more efficient, and more productive operations.

By merging Ericsson’s expertise in cellular technology with Epiroc’s global reach and deep understanding of mining applications, the collaboration offers customers an integrated solution for establishing essential wireless networks.

Epiroc digital solutions division president Paul Bergström said: “Connectivity is becoming increasingly important as mining companies advance automation and digitalisation throughout their operations.

“Together with Ericsson, we are strengthening our offering and helping customers build the robust communications infrastructure needed to enable safer, more efficient, and more productive mining operations.”

The agreement extends a previous collaboration between the two companies, which began in 2018, when Epiroc and Ericsson entered a cooperation agreement to explore LTE and 5G for mining applications.

This new step is expected to simplify the deployment of foundational wireless infrastructure for mining clients seeking to scale automation, telematics, and predictive maintenance.

The partnership enhances Epiroc’s role as a productivity ally by providing customers with solutions such as automation, collision avoidance, connectivity, data-enabled machinery, and situational awareness to expand these capabilities.

This essential connectivity is key to maximising the benefits of Epiroc’s advanced digital offerings.

By uniting Ericsson’s technological expertise with Epiroc’s in-depth industry knowledge and global presence, the collaboration meets the increasing need for connected and resilient operational technology ecosystems.

Ericsson Enterprise Wireless Solutions product and engineering head Pankaj Malhotra said: “This collaboration is about enabling real operational impact for mining customers — safer operations, higher productivity, and greater efficiency.

“By providing the connectivity foundation behind Epiroc’s digital and automation solutions, we are helping mining companies modernise operations at scale.

“Our partnership with Epiroc is an important step in building the connected ecosystems that modern industrial enterprises depend on.”

In March this year, Epiroc secured a contract from an undisclosed customer in Africa for autonomous and electric surface rigs.

“Epiroc and Ericsson team up to boost 5G connectivity in mining” was originally created and published by Mining Technology, a GlobalData owned brand.
