Denver International Airport officers on Monday have been making an attempt to kind out a baggage system breakdown that blocked about 2,000 baggage from flights and delayed vacationers on Sunday, the newest of recurring baggage system issues at DIA.

DIA staffers needed to manually course of and haul baggage between 8:30 a.m. and the resumption of “regular” operations round 4 p.m. Sunday.

It was unclear what number of delays resulted from the breakdown. Sometimes, 1,700 to 2,000 flights a day arrive and depart from DIA. In response to FlightAware monitoring information, 460 flights at DIA have been delayed and 23 have been canceled on Sunday — down from 528 delays and 31 cancelations on Saturday. On Monday at 1:15 p.m., DIA had 119 delays and 4 cancellations.

“We imagine the problem is related to gear put in in about 2018,” DIA spokesman Michael Konopasek stated in an emailed response.

“There have been about 2,000 baggage that didn’t load on flights. The backlog just isn’t impacting operations” on Monday, Konopasek stated.

DIA has acquired a federal grant to enhance its baggage system, which depends on conveyor belts and different gear to display screen hundreds of thousands of luggage a month. As extra vacationers transfer by way of the airport — round 78 million a yr — airport crews have been hard-pressed to stop breakdowns.

The airport opened in 1995 and was designed with a capability for 50 million vacationers a yr.

On Jan. 7, an issue that DIA officers described as “a mechanical challenge” led to a baggage dealing with breakdown that contributed to lots of of flight delays and worsened snowstorm-related backlogs. Denver airport crews labored with airways to course of vacationers’ baggage at airline ticket counters. The town deployed police and Transportation Safety Administration canines in a scramble to course of backlogged baggage.
