Audeze has announced the Maxwell 2, the successor to its well-regarded Maxwell gaming headset. The new model features upgraded audio technology, redesigned earpads, an improved microphone system, and claims of over 80 hours of wireless battery life. The headset is available now in PlayStation and Xbox variants.

Planar Magnetic Drivers with SLAM Technology

The Maxwell 2 retains the 90mm planar magnetic drivers that distinguished the original model from most gaming headsets on the market, which typically use smaller dynamic drivers. Audeze has added its SLAM technology to this iteration, a feature first introduced in the company’s flagship CRBN2 electrostatic headphones released in 2024.

According to Audeze, the SLAM implementation is designed to improve spatial positioning and bass response. The drivers continue to use the company’s patented Fluxor magnet array and Fazor waveguides, with a quoted frequency response of 10 Hz to 50 kHz. While those figures look impressive on paper, it is worth noting that human hearing typically maxes out around 20 kHz, so the extended range is more about driver capability than audible benefit for most listeners.

The closed-back over-ear design remains, which should help with isolation during gaming sessions. Planar magnetic technology generally offers lower distortion than dynamic drivers, which has been one of the key selling points of the Maxwell line since its original release.

Redesigned Comfort Features

Audeze has made several changes to the physical design aimed at improving comfort during extended use. The suspension strap has been widened and now includes ventilation holes, addressing one of the common complaints with premium gaming headsets during longer sessions.

The earpads have been redesigned with increased internal space, which should accommodate a wider range of ear sizes. Perhaps more practically, Audeze has switched to a magnetic attachment system for the earpads, making replacement straightforward when they eventually wear out. This is a welcome change, as earpad replacement on some competing headsets can be unnecessarily fiddly.

Upgraded Microphone System

The Maxwell 2 features a removable hypercardioid boom microphone with what Audeze calls FILTER AI noise removal. The company claims this updated system offers twice the bandwidth of the previous generation, though specific technical details on what that means in practice have not been provided.

AI-powered noise cancellation for microphones has become increasingly common in gaming headsets, with varying degrees of effectiveness. The hypercardioid pickup pattern should help reject sound from the sides, which is useful in noisy environments. Hardware volume controls are included on the headset itself.

Connectivity and Battery

Wireless connectivity comes via an included USB-C dongle for low-latency gaming, alongside Bluetooth 5.3 with support for LE Audio and LDAC codecs. The dual connectivity approach means the headset can handle both gaming and general media consumption, with LDAC offering higher quality audio streaming from compatible mobile devices.

The battery life claim of over 80 hours is measured at 80 dBA, which is a fairly moderate listening level. Real-world usage will vary depending on volume levels and whether features like the microphone are in active use. USB-C charging is included for topping up between sessions.

Both the PlayStation and Xbox versions support Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and Nintendo Switch, so the console designation primarily relates to specific wireless compatibility with each platform rather than limiting overall device support.

New Software Application

Audeze has developed a new companion application launching alongside the Maxwell 2, featuring what the company describes as improved responsiveness and customisation options. The app is available on Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android, and notably also supports the original Maxwell headset, which is a considerate touch for existing owners.

Pricing and Availability

The Maxwell 2 is available now from Audeze directly and through select retailers. The PlayStation version is priced at $329, while the Xbox variant comes in at $349. UK pricing has not been confirmed at the time of writing, but based on typical conversion and import considerations, buyers should expect prices somewhere in the region of £280 to £320 depending on the version and retailer.

The $20 premium for the Xbox version follows the same pattern as the original Maxwell, which has been a point of mild frustration for Xbox users given the hardware is otherwise identical. Those considering a purchase will want to confirm which version suits their primary gaming platform before ordering.
