Inside The Future of Beauty Business The Business Behind the Beauty On the Expo Floor Beyond the Business Cards

To help independent beauty players survive an increasingly cutthroat market, Alsu Sharafutdinova, a 3-time award-winning entrepreneur who started as a freelance makeup artist before turning a single salon into a multi-brand company, launched a dedicated forum to trade splashy marketing tricks for real unit economics and peer-to-peer strategy, focusing on the rise of Indie Beauty Founders.

Driven by a staggering 22% year-over-year dollar sales growth (more than triple the 6% logged by legacy conglomerates, according to NielsenIQ’s 2026 analysis), independent beauty is officially setting the industry’s pace. Yet, most of the founders fueling this boom are navigating the complex business landscape entirely alone, lacking the institutional infrastructure or peer networks required to convert early traction into a durable enterprise.

These Indie Beauty Founders are revolutionizing the market and setting trends that challenge traditional beauty norms.

To create a room where indie founders learn from each other, entrepreneur and salon owner Alsu Sharafutdinova organized and successfully held the first “The Future of Beauty Business” forum in Manhattan. She started as a freelance makeup artist and hairstylist before opening her first beauty salon, Effect Brow Bar, in 2017 on a modest budget, reaching profitability within three months without a large advertising spend. She has since expanded into a second Effect Brow Bar location in Moscow, founded the permanent makeup studio Posh Permanent, and launched the skincare label Yash Natural Skincare. The industry has taken notice: she picked up the Best Entrepreneur in the Beauty Industry title at the Best Talents contest, an International Best Beauty Entrepreneur honor from the International Beauty Fashion Awards, and Entrepreneur of the Year in the Beauty Industry at Creative Industries.

Armed with a track record of building profitable brands from scratch, she set out to build a centralized arena where peer competitors could trade isolation for a shared survival strategy.

Inside The Future of Beauty Business

The resulting environment in Manhattan on June 18 felt less like a standard corporate mixer and more like a high-stakes council. 50 beauty founders, professionals, educators, and emerging brands gathered to strip away the superficial glamour of the beauty world and address the cold realities of market saturation. The forum was intentionally engineered around the exact tactical pillars the current hyper-competitive moment demands: unvarnished education, product innovation, and high-impact peer networking.

The Business Behind the Beauty

The education program skipped generic inspirational talking points in favor of hard operating experience. Seven speakers, including established salon owners and beauty entrepreneurs, took the stage to dissect the operational hurdles most founders struggle to clear.

For instance, Mariam Khayretdinova, CEO and co-founder of Brainify.AI, a TEDx speaker and Harvard alumna, called to stop chasing every AI trend. She recommended finding the one narrow, data-backed problem AI can actually solve for your business, then going deep. It’s the same approach she used to build her own company around a single, rigorously validated biomarker instead of riding the broader AI hype. VIP speaker Zarina Yeva, an actress and model whose work spans Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and luxury houses like Dior and Balmain, argued that credibility built across print, runway, and film at once means no single platform or algorithm controls her visibility.

The block closed with Anelya Alim, the founder of both Anelya Alim Cosmetics, a vegan makeup line that’s sponsored fashion weeks from Brooklyn to Miami to Orlando and drawn coverage from Forbes, and Anelya Alim Academy. She argued that beauty entrepreneurs shouldn’t rely on one revenue stream and that products, education, and personal brand each need to earn money on their own, so no single one of them can sink the business if it stalls.

On building a U.S. enterprise, that meant confronting unglamorous fundamentals like state-by-state licensing, corporate structuring, and rigorous cash management. On personal branding, speakers urged founders to anchor their marketing in repeatable customer rituals rather than chasing volatile, one-off spikes in attention. The overarching warning from manufacturers was clear: do not mistake early orders from friends and family for genuine market demand, and never over-invest in an initial production run before that demand is quantified. Ultimately, long-term survival relies on bulletproof unit economics.

On the Expo Floor

The Beauty Expo brought tangible innovation into the room, bypassing splashy influencer activations for direct, peer-to-peer product exchange. Industry giant Empire Beauty School partnered on the event, showcasing its newly expanded cosmetology, esthetics, and nail programs. Alongside them, emerging labels like Eye Candi Cosmetics, Beauty Divamreyes, EcoDeva, and Maquillate demonstrated the frontline of product development, ranging from proprietary new formulas to highly targeted, niche product lines built for specific demographics.

Adding a media dimension to the night, Dr. Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe, a working royal, award-winning TV and event host, and Bertelsmann Randomhouse author, hosted the evening.

Beyond the Business Cards

The insight exchange went on with a dedicated networking session, giving founders room for informal conversations. The attendees left with direct contacts they wouldn’t have found through a job board or an algorithm. Such connections usually tend to turn into partnerships later, not on stage.

“When I was starting out, there was no one who could sit me down and say, ‘Here’s how you survive as a beauty business owner in America.’ I wanted newcomers and people already in this industry to be able to ask beauty leaders who’ve lived through it directly. And I wanted small cosmetic brands who are just starting out to have a room to present themselves and their solutions to real people,” Alsu says.

It’s no longer just about beating the conglomerates; the real battle in beauty is now indie-versus-indie. As thousands of emerging labels scramble for the same shelf space and retail dollars, the competition has never been more cutthroat. For market players trying to figure out how to outlast their immediate peers, isolation is a liability. Gatherings like The Future of Beauty Business offer a way out: fewer founders going it alone, more of them comparing notes.
