If you’ve been following my travels over the last few years, you know that I have developed a bit of an obsession with the Dominican Republic. I’ve visited for the past three years running, and honestly, I’m already looking at the calendar to figure out when I can squeeze in trip number four.

So, when the news broke this week that the Dominican Republic officially closed the books on 2025 with a historic 11.6 million visitors, I wasn’t surprised. I was just nodding my head.

The secret is officially out.

The country has evolved from what used to be seen as just a “cheap winter escape” into a Caribbean powerhouse that is frankly outperforming almost every competitor in the region.

The stats are staggering—December alone saw nearly 960,000 travelers arriving by air, a 10% jump over the previous year.

But numbers on a spreadsheet are one thing. The experience on the ground is another. Having explored Punta Cana, the up-and-coming Miches, and the northern coast of Puerto Plata, I’ve seen exactly why millions of travelers are flocking here. It’s not just about the weather; it’s about a massive leap in quality, luxury, and variety.

Here is why the DR is breaking records, why I keep going back, and why all of us at Travel Off Path can’t wait to plan our next visit.

The “Next Level” Luxury Factor

One of the main reasons the DR is crushing tourism records is the sheer quality of the hotel inventory. We aren’t just talking about budget party hotels anymore.

In Punta Cana, I stayed at the Live Aqua, and to be honest, it completely changed my perception of what an all-inclusive in the DR could be. It was crazy, next-level luxury. The service, the food, the attention to detail, it was impeccable.

I was so impressed that I actually suggested it to my dad and stepmom for their vacation. They took my advice, booked a trip, and absolutely LOVED IT. In fact, they are now planning yearly trips back to the same spot. When you have a destination that turns first-timers into annual repeaters that quickly, you know the tourism numbers are going to skyrocket.

If you are looking for that perfect blend of relaxation and high-end service, you can read my thoughts on the Live Aqua here to see why it stands out in a crowded market.

Expanding Horizons: The Rise of Miches

Another reason for the record-breaking 11.6 million visitors is that the country isn’t just relying on Punta Cana anymore. They are opening entirely new regions.

The source data shows that the country added approximately 2,500 new hotel rooms this year alone, with a huge focus on Miches. This is a lush, pristine area just north of Punta Cana that feels worlds away from the busy Bavaro strip.

I stayed at the Viva Wyndham Miches, and it was a breath of fresh air. It feels like you are discovering a secret before the rest of the world catches on. It’s beautiful, nature-forward, and significantly less crowded than the traditional hotspots. This strategy of diversifying destinations allows the country to absorb more tourists without the experience feeling diluted.

Unbeatable Value in Puerto Plata

While luxury is driving one segment of the market, value is driving the other. The Dominican Republic has managed to maintain a reputation for being accessible, even as it upgrades its infrastructure.

I headed up north to Puerto Plata and stayed at Viva Heavens. The vibe there is totally different—more laid back, lush mountains in the background, and incredible value for money.

It’s also worth noting the massive cruise boom happening here. The stats show 2.8 million cruise passengers docked in the DR this year, many of them in Puerto Plata. The government has done a great job revitalizing these port areas, making them safe and fun for day-trippers and long-term stayers alike.

For those looking to escape the high prices of other Caribbean islands, I broke down exactly why this lesser-known Caribbean destination is the perfect island getaway based on my time there.

Safety and Stability

Finally, we have to talk about the elephant in the room: Safety.

In an era where travelers are hyper-aware of geopolitical tensions, the DR has managed to maintain a reputation as a secure, reliable getaway. I have felt incredibly safe during my trips over the last three years, whether I was in a luxury resort in Punta Cana or exploring the newer areas of Miches.

This perception of safety is a huge driver for the “structural strength” tourism officials are talking about. While other destinations are scrambling to recover or facing slowdowns from the U.S. market, the Dominican Republic is accelerating. The Punta Cana Airport recently broke an all-time record with 155 flights in a single day! That kind of demand doesn’t happen by accident.

The Bottom Line

The Dominican Republic isn’t just getting lucky; they are building a tourism product that works for everyone. Whether you are like my dad and stepmom looking for high-end luxury at Live Aqua, or you want to explore new frontiers in Miches, there is a room for you.
